Security Overview for Thailand
Beyond the recent political upheaval that recently gripped the country, particularly the capital, Bangkok, petty crime remains the top security concern for visitors and expatriates in Thailand. Street-crime levels are moderate throughout much of Thailand, although caution is necessary in major cities, especially Bangkok, and popular tourist destinations such as Pattaya. Crimes that typically affect foreigners include petty theft and a variety of scams.
Large-scale demonstrations have become common in Bangkok due to growing opposition to the current military-backed government. Despite the recent protests that many feared were leading the country toward civil war, protests typically remained peaceful. Occasional strikes can significantly disrupt public transportation and other essential services. Labor unrest has eased in recent years, but unions occasionally organize large-scale rallies.
Foreign-inspired terrorism has not been a major problem in Thailand, but in the past a number of militant groups operated or procured arms in the country. Authorities have been unable to prove that foreign extremists are directly involved in the Muslim separatist conflict in the Deep South provinces near the Malaysian border. Bombings, shootings and arson attacks are near-daily occurrences in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces. Separatist-related violence has also occurred in neighboring Hat Yai and other parts of Songhkla Province.
Politically motivated bombings are possible in Bangkok. Ongoing opposition to the government could lead to further acts of violence.
Border skirmishes occur infrequently along the frontier with Myanmar. Drug trafficking is a serious problem in border areas in the northern part of the country. Caution is necessary if operating in these areas.
