Security Overview for Switzerland
Switzerland is generally safe, with one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. While violent crime, such as assault, sexual assault, homicide and kidnapping, is statistically on the rise in metropolitan areas, such incidents are rare in Switzerland compared with the rest of western Europe. Exercise caution and remain vigilant while in densely populated public areas to avoid pickpockets and other petty criminals.
Specific areas known for petty crime include train stations (such as the Cornavin train station and surrounding neighborhood in Geneva), public transportation, including trains, subways, buses, commuter trains and trolleys, and public parks after dark (such as the park north of the main train station in Zurich).
Geneva is the headquarters of numerous international organizations, including the United Nations in Europe and the World Trade Organization. As a result, Geneva has been targeted for anti-globalization protests. Security for these protests is generally very good and violence is rare.
