Security Overview for Sweden
Sweden, a stable and peaceful society, has a low crime rate with few incidents of violent crime, although the number of such incidents is increasing. Petty theft and pickpocketing tend to be the most common crimes, particularly in central downtown areas. Take the same security precautions throughout Sweden that you would in any major city.
Public transportation is generally secure. Pickpocketing is more likely to occur in major tourist areas and while traveling at night.
Public demonstrations can occur with some frequency, but most rallies do not attract violence in Sweden. Anti-globalization and political-activist activities tend to occur in Stockholm and other large cities.
The overall threat of terrorism is low in Sweden, but significant incidents in recent years, including the December 2010 attempted terror attacks in Stockholm, demonstrate the presence of threats to Sweden. In 2010, Swedish authorities with Sapo, the Swedish intelligence agency, estimated that there are about 200 radicalized Muslims in Sweden.
