Security Overview for Kuwait
Kuwait is a wealthy, Western-leaning country and has traditionally been among the most crime-free countries in the world. Violent crimes are rare. Most crimes are petty thefts and pickpocketing among members of immigrant labor crews from Asia, the Philippines and Egypt. Travel by public transportation is secure.
The threat of terrorist attacks in Kuwait has fallen since security forces eliminated a major terrorist cell operating in the emirate in January-February 2005. During that period, security forces engaged in several shoot-outs with Islamic militants, killing and arresting all but two members of a cell planning attacks against Western targets. However, there remains a possibility of attacks by Al-Qaeda or Al-Qaeda sympathizers against Westerners and Western interests due to the large presence of Western civilian and military forces in Kuwait. Security forces often go on a high state of alert after terrorist attacks in neighboring countries.
Kuwait is a Muslim state and, as is the case in many Muslim countries, verbal and physical harassment of Westerners, especially women, does occur. Dress conservatively and, if threatened, enter a public store or hotel. Women should not travel alone and should avoid direct eye contact with Kuwaiti men.
Civil unrest, normally uncommon in Kuwait, increased leading up to and in the early stages of the war with Iraq. Anti-Western sentiment among the general population is low, but concern remains over Islamic fundamentalism. Protests are usually small and related to labor and political issues.
Incidents of kidnapping are rare in Kuwait. But given the ongoing hostilities in Iraq, Westerners in Kuwait could be targeted.
