Security Overview for Finland
Finland is a relatively safe country with a low crime rate, despite an increase in certain crimes over the past few years. Drug-related and racially motivated crimes have increased, but travelers are not usually victims of these acts. Petty theft and pickpocketing can be a problem, especially on public transportation and at major tourist sites.
The threat of large-scale civil unrest in Finland is generally low. Most public rallies and demonstrations are peaceful and rarely result in violent confrontations, but travelers should avoid them if possible.
There is a low threat of terrorism in Finland. Authorities in Finland have established strict counterterrorist measures, such as immigration restrictions, financial regulations, and border controls.
Kidnappings for ransom are very rare in Finland.
Racially motivated incidents involving skinheads, usually targeting non-Finnish individuals, have been concentrated in the eastern part of the country along the Russian border regions. Some skinhead groups reside in Helsinki, although incidents are more prevalent in rural areas. Similar to other crimes, alcohol exacerbates these racially motivated attacks.
Public transportation is considered safe, but petty crime is a concern.
