Security Overview for Austria
Austria is generally safe, and rates for both petty and violent crime are relatively low. In the capital, as in all Austrian cities, the main threat is pickpockets who may be present in any crowd and at restaurants, concerts and sporting events. The rate of burglary increased in Vienna in 2010, but remained low elsewhere.
Car break-ins have increased slightly in recent years, keeping with the general trend across Europe. Thieves target cars with visible valuables; stow valuables in the trunk or take them with you.
Austria is a stable democracy, and though political demonstrations occur with some frequency, protests are generally peaceful.
Austrian neo-Nazis occasionally hold meetings at rural retreats, but no group has undertaken any violent attacks since the early 1990s. Political demonstrations traditionally have minimal logistical impact, with limited violence.
